Having gone through their portfolios they have gained 40-60% of their net worth due to appreciation since the GFC. This is why California should require super expensive annually renewed licenses for any out-of-state individual to operate in real-estate here and charge an additional insane tax on any real estate bought by someone who isn't registered as a resident of the state. This would stop the assholes from buying up a bunch of property in California and living off our high rent prices while they lounge in a mansion in Austin or Beijing paying no taxes to the state. I mean honestly, I think it should be a requirement that if you own property in any given state you should be required to pay taxes as though you live there. How quickly would these real estate millionaires and billionaires have to find real jobs if suddenly all their properties around the U.S. were the reason they have to pay income taxes in 50 different states? How rapidly would housing prices drop as the property is put up for sale and nobody can afford the inflated value? How would those lower prices impact communities who up to this point haven't been able to secure enough capital to own their homes because they've been spending it all on rent?
