Okay let’s rephrase from just some company, I had to go check because it sounds insane to say someone sold a YouTube channel or something for $500,000,000.It was maker studios which was / is a huge multi channel network that essentially just feeds off a ton of you tubers earnings. When sold in 2014, it was siphoning a portion of revenue from 55,000 youtubers and 5.5 billion views a month (would assume both of those figures are now higher). (Also Disney way overpaid and I believe it was reported that it hasn’t been profitable? I’m not sure. Maybe could dig into Disney’s financial reporting but I’m lazy right now). The problem with these companies buying up these YouTube channels is that a lot of these channels have very loyal fan bases. I used to watch a channel called sourcefed owned by philip defranco and eventually he sold it, made a killing, and the channel died cause all the loyal fans followed him and the other hosts. Also the channel tried to recreate the content but it was very cringe.
