I believe 'mongoloid' is an English swear word as well but it's not used as often. Mongo is super-common in Scotland. At least it was when I was a kid. And yes it's short for mongoloid which is what people used to call (in plain usage) people with downs syndrome." Mongo" used to be pretty common in Germany too but I don't think I've heard it much if at all in the last ten years. After all, the German language offers plenty of less problematic words to insult someone's perceived lack of intelligence. My wife, who is a special ed teacher, and I went to a US football game about a decade ago and we sat next to an elderly lady and her husband. The lady was a former special ed teacher and talked about how she used to enjoy teaching so much and that her classes had a lot of "mongoloids." My wife and I were just kind of in shock as not knowing how to respond to that.
