The idea is usually to try to get done with puberty before your first, assuming you don't need it done sooner. Mine was 50% leaky by that point, so it was definitely time. If you don't get the artificial valve (which I didn't) then there is a finite life on the replacement, usually 10-15 years. I'm in year 13 and going strong.
