Also, they didn't get the resin coat 100% solid, so there was probably air getting in, but it was enough of a coat to slow evaporation. Well, I think regardless of if they got a seal it would have rotted. Pumpkins are mostly hollow with air and space which is really all you need for the bacteria/fungi to go to town.
